It is okay to use ChatGPT and similar tools in this class.
However, we will be judging cheating as just pasting the question into these systems and copying the answer to your homework. That type of ghostwriting will not be tolerated and will be listed as cheating. Conceptually, students can think of ChatGPT as a friend who can provide hints to certain questions, but as normal, just copying their work is cheating. In this class, students get credit for showing what they learned.
Usage Guidelines:
The use of generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT) is generally permitted, but it has some limitations, provided you clearly identify where and how generative AI has been used in your deliverables. More specifically:
- It is prohibited for the conceptual questions (because the point is for students to think about the question).
- You must describe how you verified that the generated content is correct and what you wanted.
- You should add a detailed appendix that lists all your prompts to the AI, along with the exact responses received.
- In your work (for example, in comments in your code or as footnotes in your reports), you should refer to the relevant prompt in your appendix.
- You must include a brief text in which you explain, quantitatively and qualitatively:
- How you used generative AI,
- Risks to the truthfulness, accuracy and quality of your work,
- The concrete steps you have taken to mitigate those risks and
- The value you yourself added to the AI-generated content, such as when you had to step in to correct or steer the generative AI.
